A pedestrian died Wednesday after authorities said a driver ran a red light and hit people at a pedestrian crossing near the National Mall while fleeing Secret Service agents.
U.S. Secret Intelligence Service Uniform Division Lt. Paul Mayhair said in a statement Just before 1:30 p.m., officers attempted to stop traffic for vehicles with expired registrations at the intersection of NW 17th Street and NW Constitution Avenue.
“The suspect suggested he was going to stop the car, but he immediately fled south on NW 17th Street,” Mayhair said.
A Secret Service spokesman said the driver fled south after running a red light and “running several people at a crosswalk.”
Mayhair said officers provided relief to the victim before DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene. The person was transported from the scene in critical condition and died of his injuries at a nearby hospital, the statement said.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet: working to find the suspect“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the victim’s family,” he added.
A bulletin about the driver was sent to local law enforcement, according to the Secret Service.
