A pediatrician from Pittsburgh has been killed, and his wife is currently hospitalized following a home invasion stabbing at their residence in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, as reported by local authorities.
Elijah Hemingway, a 32-year-old resident of Pittsburgh, has been taken into custody by Allegheny County police. His criminal history dates back to 2016, with his latest arrest occurring in July related to a burglary that happened earlier in the year, according to court documents. He was released without bail for that offense.
On Thursday, authorities filed seven additional charges against Hemingway, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and trespassing.
It’s alleged that he broke into the victims’ home on Linden Avenue around 12:30 a.m. During questioning, he claimed he had been invited inside by Dr. Evans but could not clarify how they purportedly knew each other. Investigators discovered blood on the kitchen’s windowsill and exterior door.
Dr. Evans’ wife, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, sustained stab wounds and is now in stable condition after managing to escape to a neighbor’s house and prompting a 911 call around 12:31 a.m. Police arrived promptly.
She described during the investigation that Hemingway seemed “psychotic” and declared himself “God” while attacking them, and although her husband reportedly addressed the attacker as “Elijah,” she claimed to have never met him before.
The couple’s children, aged 8 and 12, were at home during the incident.
Dr. Evans was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. after being rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile, a police K-9 located Hemingway, who was found just two doors down from where the attack occurred, dressed only in underwear.
Evidence indicated he had injuries on his hands that were consistent with the act of stabbing; however, he told officers that Dr. Evans was the one who first stabbed him, despite no stab wounds found on his back, only the cuts on his hands.
Dr. Idris Evans, aged 46, was a medical director at the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and served as an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His wife is recovering, and details about the case continue to unfold.
