Pittsburgh Doctor Stabbed to Death in Home Invasion

Homicide investigators are working to uncover the motive behind the tragic knife attack that led to the death of a physician from a children’s hospital in Pittsburgh. Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was killed while he and his wife were asleep in their home in Edgewood Borough, where both were attacked with a kitchen knife around midnight on Thursday.

According to the Allegheny County Police Department, a suspect was apprehended after being found hiding in nearby foliage. This individual, who had reportedly been released on cashless bail related to a previous burglary case, is now in custody.

The wife of Dr. Evans recounted to police that they were startled awake by an assailant attacking them in bed. Reports indicate that he was wearing only underwear and made bizarre statements, claiming he was “being God.”

During the chaos, she called out for their children, aged 8 and 12, urging them to escape to a neighbor’s home for safety.

She also revealed that Dr. Evans had referred to the attacker as “Elijah,” suggesting that he may have known the assailant.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after 12:30 a.m. to find both victims with serious stab wounds. They were rushed to the hospital, but Dr. Evans was pronounced dead later on.

“It was a very violent scene,” described Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph, emphasizing the destruction: broken furniture and mirrors painted a grim picture.

The accused, identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, was located by a K-9 unit and discovered with injuries on his hand. He is now facing several charges, including homicide, aggravated assault, and burglary.

Authorities revealed that Hemingway gained access to the home through an open window and launched his attack on the couple while they slept.

Detectives are currently investigating whether there was any prior connection between the suspect and the victims. Joseph noted, “We do not know if there was any pre-existing relationship. The woman did not know this male.”

This incident comes just days before Hemingway was set to appear in court concerning a prior burglary charge earlier this year.

Dr. Evans held the position of medical director for the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital and was also an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. A spokesperson from UPMC conveyed condolences, saying, “Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
