Flanagan’s Controversial Leadership Amid Rising Gang Violence
Democratic Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan from Minnesota has come under scrutiny for her role in shaping lenient crime policies, even as gang violence involving Somali groups escalates. In 2021, Flanagan, alongside former Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz, appointed Trahern Pollard, the founder of We Push for Peace, to the Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee. This committee manages federal grants and ensures compliance with regulations.
Establishing the committee in response to George Floyd’s death in 2020, its aim was to oversee community-led violence prevention and alternative safety programs, moving away from traditional policing. However, during Pollard’s tenure from 2021 to March 2025, the city of Minneapolis allocated nearly $2 million to his organization for initiatives related to violence interruption and outreach. The funding was specifically intended to provide “violence interruption” services for juvenile offenders, supported by the Neighborhood Safety Department, which Flanagan helped create.
On May 8, 2026, Pollard, along with another individual, was sued by the state for fraud. They faced allegations of misusing charitable resources, breaching nonprofit governance laws, and exploiting the organization for personal gain. According to the Minnesota Attorney General’s office, they reportedly diverted over $6.5 million, with Pollard personally benefiting by using charitable assets for extravagant expenses, including luxury cars and trips.
Despite this, Flanagan reappointed Pollard to the board in 2025, indicating her continued support for his work. Meanwhile, the Senate race in Minnesota appears to be tightening, with Republican candidate Michele Tafoya closing in on Flanagan in polls, which shows just how competitive it has become. The last time a Republican won a Senate seat in Minnesota was in 2002.
Recently, Tafoya expressed her belief that Minnesotans are beginning to realize the need for change given Flanagan’s track record over the past eight years alongside Walz. She emphasized the necessity for new ideas and independent thinking, indicating a potential shift in voter sentiment.
As Democrats celebrate their achievements, it seems concerns over rising gang violence continue to loom large in metropolitan areas, attributed to the policies enacted by Flanagan, Pollard, and their supporters.
