Pelosi Dismisses Ocasio-Cortez Negotiation Claims Amid Shutdown
On Wednesday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a tense exchange with reporters when asked if Republicans should consider negotiating with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to resolve the ongoing government shutdown.
One reporter questioned, “There’s this Republican notion that AOC is leading the charge, and she mentioned welcoming the senator straight to her office. Is she driving this?”
Pelosi responded sharply, “Why are you saying such a ridiculous thing?”
Following Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance on MSNBC the previous night, where she welcomed Republicans to negotiate directly, Pelosi firmly rejected the notion that Ocasio-Cortez was spearheading the negotiations. She emphasized that minority leader Hakem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) was the primary Democrat engaging in discussions.
Pelosi remarked on Ocasio-Cortez’s value as a team player, stating, “She’s great, but this requires significant experience and unity from the Caucus.” She insisted that portraying Ocasio-Cortez as a central figure in the negotiations was misleading and not reflective of the broader leadership dynamics.
This isn’t the first time Pelosi has addressed Ocasio-Cortez’s role within the party. In 2019, after a conflict over a border funding bill, Pelosi remarked to the New York Times that Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives, despite their social media presence, did not represent a majority, noting, “They’re four, and that’s the number of votes they’ve got.”
As tensions continue, it’s clear that Pelosi is acutely aware of both Ocasio-Cortez’s influence and the broader party dynamics at play.
