Nancy Pelosi Discusses Impeachment of Trump
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has indicated that there isn’t currently sufficient grounds to pursue a third impeachment of President Donald Trump. In a conversation with Susan Page from USA Today, she was asked if Democrats should consider this route should they regain control of the House in 2026.
Pelosi stated, “When I was Speaker, the person most responsible for impeaching President Trump was President Trump.” She elaborated on his actions, particularly regarding President Zelenskiy, as evidence of his disregard for the Constitution and the integrity of U.S. elections.
Continuing, she mentioned January 6, emphasizing that it was an insurrection incited by the president, despite any attempts he might make to reshape that narrative.
The discussion then turned to whether impeachment should remain on the Democratic agenda. Pelosi suggested, “If he crosses the border again.” Yet she highlighted the importance of having solid reasons for such actions: “Thank you for your review. This was a very serious and historic event.”
She further reflected on the founders’ intention for impeachment to guard against rogue presidents, noting the unfortunate situation of having a rogue Senate lacking the courage to act decisively. “We had bipartisanship in the Senate, but that wasn’t enough,” she admitted.
Over the past year, Representative Al Green (D-Texas) has taken initiative by filing several articles of impeachment against Trump, who is currently serving his second term. Most recently, he attempted to push through two articles of impeachment via a resolution that would expedite the voting process, though his efforts were thwarted with a vote against the proposal from 23 House Democrats alongside Republicans.
