Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) said on Sunday that it was “shameful” that Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas are so “nonchalant” about ethics.
“Well, I think they have the opportunity to write some ethical rules themselves. That’s what the presiding judge said we could do ourselves. It doesn’t seem like there’s been any action taken there.” But regardless, that’s what they say,” she said on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki.”
“But I give the Senator credit.” [Sheldon] The White House (DR.I.) has a majority in the Senate and can point out what needs to be done to maintain integrity on the court. Honesty on the court. It is shameful that Judges Thomas and Alito were so blunt about their transgressions,” she added.
Asked what reforms could be considered in light of recent reports, Pelosi also said there should be tenure limits for judges and additional ethical codes that judges should follow.
Pelosi’s comments on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki” come as Alito and Thomas face intense scrutiny for alleged ethical misconduct. Alito last week admitted in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal that he accepted a seat on a private plane at the expense of billionaire hedge fund owner Paul Singer, a major Republican contributor. He is the latest judge to come under fire for such an act. .
In an op-ed that preceded ProPublica’s coverage of the case, he also later admitted to taking part in several cases involving subsidiaries of Singer’s funds.
Thomas also paid for Harlan Crow, who donates millions of dollars to conservative causes, to participate in multiple vacations, including trips on Harlan’s private jet and 162-foot yacht. He has also faced criticism after a ProPublica report revealed he paid a judge.
