Pelosi: Vance's 'personal connection' during abortion debate discussion was 'clever' but 'isn't real'

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance's “personal connection” to reproductive rights during Tuesday's vice presidential debate “wise.” However, she emphasized that this was not the case, saying, “That is not reality.” There is no clear support for women making their own reproductive decisions.

Pelosi told host Dana Bash: “I think it was wise to use personal connections, but women have the right to make their own decisions, and politicians don't make decisions for them.'' It's not realistic that there isn't.” CNN interview.

Mr. Bash asked Ms. Pelosi how she would react to Mr. Vance's comments during the debate in which he opened up about a woman he knew who had an abortion.

“I grew up in a working-class neighborhood where I knew many young women who had unplanned pregnancies and ended their pregnancies because they felt they had no other choice. “I decided to do that,” Vance said during the debate. .

“And one of them is actually very important to me. I know she's watching tonight, and I love you. I said I feel like it would have been over if I didn't.'She was in an abusive relationship that ruined her life,'' he said.

Vance later added, “We have to do a better job of regaining the trust of the American people on this issue where, frankly, they don't trust us.”

Bash also said undecided female voters in CNN's post-debate focus group were “emboldened” to turn to the Republican candidate because Vance's answers “sounded more progressive” than expected. He also mentioned that.

But Pelosi was quick to slam the Trump-Vance ticket on the national abortion ban.

“This administration supports abortion bans, a national abortion ban, but even though we say leave it up to the states, each state has its own abortion ban system. We believe that Roe v. Wade is our national policy. “We need to protect our state and our country by doing so,” Pelosi said.

“I don't know what hope she saw in that,” Pelosi added. “A woman's right to choose is to choose whether or not to have children.”

Former President Trump addressed the issue, posting on Truth Social that he would veto the federal abortion ban while the topic was being discussed in a debate. He had previously refused to say whether he would do so.

“Everyone knows that under no circumstances would I support a federal abortion ban and would in fact veto it, because it would be based on the will of the voters (the will of the people!) Because it’s up to the states to decide,” Trump wrote.

Abortion has been a focus of this election cycle, with this presidential election being the first since Roe v. Wade was overturned.

A recent KFF poll found that most voters believe November's presidential election will have a “significant” impact on access to abortion, but that the economy and inflation will be more important than abortion or other personal health issues. Many people said they were concerned.

Data shows 61% of voters surveyed say the outcome of this year's presidential election will have a major impact on access to abortion in this country, up 10 percentage points from a similar poll in March. I am doing it.

The Hill has reached out to Vance's press team for comment.
