Christine Pelosi Announces Senate Run in California
Christine Pelosi, the daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, revealed her intention to run for the California Senate on Monday. She has chosen this path instead of seeking her mother’s soon-to-be-vacated Congressional seat.
In a video shared on X, the younger Pelosi expressed her commitment to “organize power for the people.” She outlined her plans to advocate for “women’s rights” and “consumer rights” if she secures a seat in the California State Senate. This announcement follows her mother’s recent decision to step down and not seek re-election for the House of Representatives in 2026. There had been speculation regarding Christine as a potential contender for the open Congressional seat.

“I’m running for Sacramento to represent San Francisco,” she mentioned in her candidacy video. “What do we do when our freedoms are under attack? We speak up, we fight back, we organize. Power for the people.”
Other Democratic hopefuls for the seat include Sai Chakrabarti, a former Chief of Staff and Campaign Manager for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and California Senator Scott Wiener, who is recognized for his progressive views on LGBTQ issues. Both had already declared their candidacies prior to Nancy Pelosi’s retirement announcement.
Wiener has been in the spotlight for supporting a bill that allows certain individuals who engage in sexual activities with minors to avoid registering as sex offenders, which became law in 2020.
Moreover, former San Francisco Mayor London Breed, also a Democrat, has indicated that she is contemplating a run for the Congressional seat.
Christine Pelosi has previously served as a prosecutor in San Francisco and currently leads the Golden State Democratic National Committee along with the Sacramento Bee, which reported on her candidacy announcement.
