An Arizona State University hockey player is still incapacitated after a tough workout during a heat wave. The family’s lawyer, Rob Carey, criticized the university’s response and is calling for the immediate firing of the head coach, who is currently on paid leave.
Kuzmenko returns to Penguins after personal tragedy
Pittsburgh Penguins player Andrei Kuzmenko rejoined his team on Friday following the recent death of his father, who tragically succumbed to injuries from a bear attack while fishing in Siberia last month.
In an emotional display, Kuzmenko, playing his first season with the Penguins, announced he would honor his father’s memory by changing his jersey number.
At a media session before the Penguins’ upcoming game against the Montreal Canadiens, a remarkably composed Kuzmenko acknowledged the role of reporters, expressing his willingness to share his story.
He recounted the events leading to his father’s death: “My father went fishing with friends and stayed in the water. A bear attacked him from behind. He fought the bear for about an hour and ten minutes, and somehow he survived for two days after that.”
He expressed gratitude for the support he received during this difficult time.
Previously, Kuzmenko had worn No. 96 throughout his NHL career with teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, and Los Angeles Kings. Initially signed with the Penguins, he planned to wear No. 10.
However, he has now opted for No. 62, which holds significant personal meaning; his father was 62 at the time of his death, and his mother was born in 1962.
Kuzmenko, who came to the NHL after a stint in the KHL, has played 271 games since the start of the 2022-23 season, accumulating 182 points (85 goals and 97 assists).
