Election officials in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, have stopped using ballot drop boxes in elections due to safety and cost concerns.
Luzerne County Administrator Romilda Crocamo announced the decision Wednesday, arguing that safety and financial concerns made the removal necessary.
“This lack of oversight raises serious concerns about the potential for unauthorized access and misuse.”
“We recognize that the ballot drop box can be an alternative method for voters to cast their ballot, but in the current political climate the safety and security of our community must remain a priority,” Crocamo said.
of The Times Leader reported The county had set up four ballot drop boxes for voters.
Crocamo visited one site and documented the drop box issues.
“The venue is attractive, but the drop box is located in the entrance hall, the outside door is open 24 hours a day and there is no staff nearby to monitor the second entrance that requires a passcode,” Crocamo said of the drop box located on property owned by the Luzerne County Housing Authority.
“This lack of oversight raises serious concerns about the potential for unauthorized access and misuse,” she added.
“We are particularly concerned about possible illegal activity, such as individuals mailing out multiple ballots,” Crocamo acknowledged.
While drop boxes are closed, voters can still drop off their mail-in ballots in locations where election observers can monitor multiple ballots. Pennsylvania law requires voters to return their ballots in person, with some exceptions, such as for people with disabilities.
Crocamo said the chairman of the Board of Elections reviewed her plan and supported it.
“In conclusion, we believe this decision is in the best interest of our community,” she concluded. “We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate these complex issues during this complex time. Together, we can ensure a safe and secure voting experience for all.”
