NFL Teams Debate the “Tush Push” Play
Several NFL teams have been vocal about their objections to the “Tush Push” play this offseason. The Philadelphia Eagles, in particular, have had remarkable success with it—converting first downs or scoring touchdowns about 87% of the time since 2022. This success has propelled them to two Super Bowl appearances and a victory last season, thwarting the Kansas City Chiefs’ attempt at a three-peat.
The Green Bay Packers suggested an official prohibition on the play, receiving considerable backing. However, they ultimately fell short of the votes needed to make a ban happen.
Interestingly, a recent poll by Quinnipiac University highlighted that 72% of Pennsylvania NFL fans support the “Tush Push.” Among Eagles fans specifically, that number climbs to 81%. Comparatively, only 16% of the state’s fans want to see it banned, while 8% of Eagles fans oppose it. For a broader perspective, around 65% of all NFL fans are okay with the move, against 23% who aren’t.
A local fan might say that the ban feels a bit unnecessary, especially considering how some teams simply can’t seem to stop it. Dr. Brittani Webb, an assistant professor at Quinnipiac University’s Communications School, weighed in on the fan sentiment. She noted that fans often resist when the league tries to eliminate exciting, albeit dangerous, elements of the game. In the case of the “Tush Push,” it seems that support for the Eagles really crosses beyond simple fandom—it’s about their attitude towards the sport itself.
This season, the Eagles have had a strong start to their Super Bowl title defense, winning each of their first four games. Despite some scrutiny regarding false starts related to the “Tush Push,” the Eagles and their supporters continue to rally behind it.
