Pennsylvania Rep. Dwight Evans says he’s recovering from a minor stroke

U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans, D-Philadelphia, said Thursday that he is in a rehabilitation facility recovering from a mild stroke and plans to return to voting in Washington in about six weeks.

Evans, a four-term Democrat, said he has a problem with one of his legs that will affect his ability to walk for some time, but he expects to be released from a rehabilitation facility in about a week.

Mr Evans, 70, was diagnosed with a stroke this week but said his symptoms were mild and he didn’t know what had happened for a few days, but that the stroke would not affect his ability to serve in Parliament in the long term.

He said he plans to take some time off and then decide how to make his diagnosis public.

“Over the coming months I want to educate people and help remove the stigma that can sometimes be associated with stroke. Many people recover and are able to carry on with their lives and work,” Evans said.

Evans served in the state House for 36 years, rising to the position of chairman of the Appropriations Committee before winning the seat held by convicted former U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah.
