The Justice Department has announced that a woman from Pennsylvania, Jasmine Williams, has been sentenced to five years in prison for defrauding the federal government out of $1.7 million in FEMA funds after Hurricane Ida. Williams, 34, pleaded guilty to 32 various charges, including fraud and wire fraud, last year related to the disaster declaration.
Assistant Secretary Loren Biss of the Department of Homeland Security emphasized that FEMA is actively working to eliminate fraud in disaster relief efforts. “We are dedicated to protecting taxpayer dollars and ensuring that assistance reaches those who genuinely need it,” Biss stated. He added that anyone trying to exploit survivors would be caught and held accountable.
Following the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which impacted significant areas of the state in September 2021, a disaster declaration was issued by President Biden. Williams was reportedly involved in recruiting renters, homeowners, and even homeless individuals to participate in her fraudulent scheme. She submitted false documents to FEMA for about 200 people, including bogus rental agreements and utility bills.
Interestingly, she used social media to find participants, promoting her ability to help them secure FEMA benefits. As part of the scheme, Williams requested 50% of the benefits for herself, making off with hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process.
Things took a twist when one participant failed to pay her; she shared that person’s personal details on social media and even made a critical video about them. Federal prosecutors noted that she also solicited images of damaged properties from social media to bolster her fraudulent claims.
This year, FEMA has already identified more than 1,700 cases of fraud in fiscal year 2025, indicating a larger issue at hand.
