Pentagon cancels flu vaccine requirement for U.S. service members

U.S. Military Alters Flu Vaccine Requirement

On April 21, 2026, War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a significant change in military health policy. The U.S. Department of War will now make the annual influenza vaccine optional for service members.

This new directive, effective immediately, transitions the flu shot from a compulsory requirement to a voluntary choice for all active-duty personnel, National Guard members, Reservists, and Department of War civilian staff.

Hegseth described the previous mandate as “overly broad” and “not rational.” He argued that this policy change is a vital move towards reclaiming medical autonomy and religious freedom within the military.

The formal decision was documented in a memorandum signed on Monday, effectively putting an end to a requirement that has been part of military medical readiness since the early 1950s.

While he encourages service members to get vaccinated if they feel it’s beneficial, Hegseth affirmed that the government will no longer enforce it. He emphasized that personal beliefs and convictions are “not negotiable.”

According to the new guidelines, military branches have 15 days to request exceptions if they believe vaccination should still be mandated in specific high-risk situations, like at recruit training centers.

This policy shift comes after years of contentious discussions over military vaccination rules, largely fueled by the controversial COVID-19 mRNA vaccine mandate initiated in 2021. That policy resulted in the discharge of over 8,000 service members before Congress repealed it in 2023.

The Trump administration has since been focused on reinstating those affected with back pay. This latest decision regarding the flu vaccine fits into a broader initiative to roll back what the administration deems as “absurd, overreaching mandates” that hinder military readiness.

However, military public health officials have consistently defended the flu vaccine requirement as essential for maintaining troop readiness, citing the “risk of rapid transmission” in confined settings like ships and barracks.
