The Department of Defense issued an astonishing memorandum declaring military transgender last night and will be discharged within 30 days. People with gender discomfort say they are “incompatible with the mental and physical standards required by the military.” pic.twitter.com/jpvhv4jupx
The memo states: “Constraints of medical, surgical, and mental health for individuals with a current diagnosis or history or showing symptoms consistent with gender discomfort are not compatible with the mental and physical standards required for military service.”
The memo also cited President Donald Trump's January 27thth The executive order says allowing trans people to serve the military threatens its preparation and undermines unit cohesion.
“The services by these individuals are clearly not in the best interests of military services and not in the interests of national security,” the policy memo on Wednesday said.
Additionally, the memo orders the Pentagon to identify transgender individuals in the military within 30 days, and remove them within another 30 days, giving them honorable discharge.
“All service members processed for separation in accordance with this policy will be provided with all statutory rights and benefits,” the memo notes.
Regarding exemptions, they are considered on a case-by-case basis, citing the need for “attractive government interests” to “directly support war combat capabilities” and to maintain individuals who meet gender-related standards.
The note also states that service members must demonstrate 36 months of stability in sex and have never tried to physically transition.
During Trump's first term, he issued a similar ban on transgender soldiers. Former Defense Secretary James Mattis attempted to delay the implementation of the policy during Trump's first term.
Nevertheless, Biden reversed the ban after taking office in January 2021, as the military fought publicly to publicly celebrate trans service members during his administration.
“The policies that prevent trans people from serving as trans people, even if they are completely prohibited, through the requirements to serve birth sex, whether they are simple and simple.) wrote a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
In January 2023, Major Rachel Jones was celebrated by the military for coming out as a transgender woman.
