Pentagon solves one of its highest-profile UFO mysteries

Pentagon officials announced to Congress on Tuesday that the agency has solved a high-profile UFO mystery from 2016 that showed what appeared to be an object flying at high speed just above the surface of the water.

The object was recorded by a fighter jet from the USS Theodore Roosevelt off the east coast of Florida in 2016 and became known as the “GOFAST” video when it was released the following year.

The grainy black-and-white video is from the fighter jet's heads-up display, which eventually locks onto the object and the pilot can be heard yelling, “Oh, I get it!…Oh my god.”

Dr. Jon Kosloski, Director, All Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (sea span)

Dr. John Kosloski, director of the All Area Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), which is tasked with investigating UFOs, or what the Department of Defense calls Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UPAs), believes the object was not an anomaly or that it had come from space. He said that it was not something he had done. Ordinary — and floating on water, but actually 13,000 feet above the ocean.

He said the phenomenon is caused by a trick of the eye called “parallax” that makes objects appear to be moving faster.

“After very careful analysis of geospatial information and use of trigonometry, we assess with high confidence that the object is not actually near the water surface, but rather closer to 13,000 feet.” Kosloski said, adding that his office is conducting a detailed analysis. He said the object, which could not be identified, followed a relatively straight trajectory, slowly curving and descending near the end of the analyzed video.

Kosloski also introduced two other solved cases, what the Pentagon calls the “Puerto Rican Object,” and “Mt. Etna,” the latter of which flew over the Mediterranean Sea in 2018 and was part of the erupting Mt. Etna. It was captured by an unmanned aerial vehicle that was watching the scene. He said he believes the public is not well aware of this.

“And the object appears to be flying through a plume of superheated gas and ash,” Koslosky said.

“This was a pretty difficult incident to solve. We had to get help from a number of IC and S&T partners, we even had to contact volcanologists, and we had to do a very detailed modification and Through a pixel-by-pixel analysis of the object as it moved, they determined that on the other side of the cloud, the object was actually 170 meters away from the plume and was not flying through it.

He said his office continues to actively investigate incidents involving “orange spheres” and “metal cylinders.”

Kosloski spoke before the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities. The Department of Defense created AARO in 2022 to allow military and government officials to report UFO sightings in one place.

He said AARO “has found no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial life, activity, or technology.”

Despite having solved hundreds of cases, Kosloski said his office does not believe all UAPs are birds, balloons or drones. “There are some very unusual objects,” he said.
