Trump Plans Christopher Columbus Statue Near the White House
President Donald Trump is set to place a statue of Christopher Columbus outside the White House. This action is seen as a clear response to recent movements against historical figures, particularly Columbus, whose statue was torn down in Baltimore on July 4, 2020.
Columbus, known for his voyages that ignited European exploration of the Americas, was long celebrated for his adventurous spirit. Many places across the U.S. carry his name. However, lately, his legacy has been scrutinized, particularly from more liberal circles.
During the protests that characterized 2020, Columbus was frequently targeted. Activists vandalized monuments, renamed places, and fired up debates about historical representation. This was part of a larger pattern of demonstrations against perceived injustices.
Some municipalities and organizations, such as the Smithsonian, began advocating for a shift from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day, which has led to the removal of several statues across the nation.
On July 4, 2020, in Baltimore’s Little Italy, masked individuals looked to topple a Columbus statue. They disrupted locals and eventually succeeded, tossing the statue into Baltimore’s harbor amidst applause.
Efforts to restore the Columbus statue began after it was recovered from the water. Artist Tillman Hemsley, along with his son, used 3D scans to recreate it from the fragments found. They worked diligently to return the statue to its former glory.
Bill Martin, an Italian-American businessman involved in the recovery, reported that over $100,000 was spent on restoration efforts to bring the statue back.
John Pica Jr., head of the Federation of Italian American Organizations, revealed that the White House had shown interest in acquiring the reconstructed statue. His organization unanimously voted to loan the statue to the White House, signing a deal recently.
Pica expressed cautious optimism about the statue’s potential installation, anticipating that it could happen soon.
Insiders indicated the statue may be placed on the White House’s south side. Nino Mangione, a Maryland Republican involved in the recovery, shared his excitement over the statue representing Italian-American pride.
Trump recently praised Columbus, calling him “an original American hero.” He expressed a commitment to reclaiming Columbus’ legacy from those who seek to diminish it.
While the White House has not commented on the installation details, press secretary Davis Engle stated that Columbus is considered a hero in the current administration.
