PepsiCo products removed from supermarket giant’s shelves over ‘unacceptable’ price hikes

European supermarket chain Carrefour has removed PepsiCo products from its shelves, saying the price hikes are “unacceptable”.

This issue is being raised by other major companies in the industry as well.

The chain, which has more than 12,000 stores worldwide, is stocking PepsiCo Pepsi and 7Up sodas, Lipton teas and Quaker foods from shelves in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium, according to multiple reports. They have started removing Doritos and Lay's chips.

A spokesperson for the supermarket chain told The Wall Street Journal that it added a warning to shelves explaining the reasoning behind the change.

Carrefour has already expressed concern about the cost of groceries, adding a price warning in September to pressure manufacturers to cut costs.

The company added a label to the product stating, “The volume or weight of this product has decreased, resulting in an increase in the supplier's effective price.”

Michel-Edouard Leclerc, CEO of rival supermarket chain E. Leclerc, also publicly complained about price hikes from suppliers in a recent LinkedIn post.

“Therefore, within the next month, we will be asking all major suppliers who made the mistake of raising prices too much to either lower their prices now or to ease them,” Leclerc said, according to an English translation of his post. I have to convince them.” “We have to go back to being more rational, more transparent and better distributing the impact of costs.”
