Perry Bamonte of The Cure Passes Away at 65
Perry Bamonte, a long-serving guitarist and keyboardist for the band The Cure, sadly passed away during the Christmas holidays. He was 65 years old.
The band confirmed Bamonte’s death on their official website, noting that he “passed away after a short illness.” They expressed their sorrow, stating, “It is with great sadness that we announce that our great friend and bandmate Perry Bamonte passed away at home on Christmas Day after a short illness.” The statement described him as “quiet, intense, intuitive, relentless, and wildly creative,” emphasizing his role as an essential part of The Cure’s legacy.
Bamonte officially joined The Cure in 1990 after initially working with the band’s road crew in 1984. He played multiple instruments, including guitar and keyboards, contributing to five albums, such as “Wish,” “Wild Mood Swings,” and “Bloodflowers.” Throughout his time with the band, Bamonte performed over 400 shows during 14 years.
In 2022, he rejoined The Cure and played during notable concerts, including a significant performance in London on November 1, 2024. The band shared their condolences for his family, mentioning that he would be greatly missed.
Originally from London, Bamonte began his career with The Cure as a member in 1990. He was let go in 2005 but continued his music journey, joining the British rock supergroup Love Amongst Ruin in 2012. He played a part in their 2015 album “Loose Your Way.”
After leaving the band, he reunited with The Cure in 2019 for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where the group performed some of their most famous tracks. His final performance with them occurred in November 2024, supporting their new album “Songs of a Lost World,” which was documented in a concert film.
The Cure was formed in 1976 by three friends—Robert Smith, Michael Dempsey, and Lol Tolhurst. They have received four Grammy nominations in their extensive career.
Bamonte is survived by his wife, Donna.
