Person Arrested After Breaking Security and Allegedly Charging at Host on 'Today Show'

Security Breach at “Today Show” Involving Intruder

A yet-to-be-identified man reportedly breached security at the “Today Show” on Thursday morning and allegedly lunged towards NBC host Craig Melvin.

According to law enforcement sources, the unauthorized individual made his way past security, entering the building from the plaza around 9 a.m. He was reportedly searching for well-known staff member Al Roker. After not finding Roker, he then confronted Melvin in a restricted area, where he allegedly yelled a racial slur while lunging at him. The “Today Show” confirmed to TMZ that someone entered an area off-limits and approached Melvin before being detained by authorities.

Fortunately, the show stated, “There was no altercation, and no one was injured.”

The suspect was arrested without any weapons on him during the incident, as reported by TMZ. Sources described him as a white male who accessed the building through a staircase, heading backstage near the dressing rooms.

This encounter was reportedly not filmed or aired during the show.

The “Today Show” communicated to TMZ that they are working with authorities on the ongoing investigation. They emphasized their commitment to safety: “NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests very seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios,” they stated.

Melvin continued with his scheduled appearance without mentioning any unusual encounters.

Footage from TMZ showed a significant police presence outside the building.

The man’s motives remain unclear at this point.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) issued a statement describing the situation: “On Thursday, July 16, 2026, at approximately 0857 hours, a uniformed officer assigned to 30 Rockefeller Center was alerted to a disorderly individual inside the building. Immediately thereafter, the responding officer entered into the building and placed the individual in custody without incident. There were no injuries reported, and the investigation remains active and ongoing. Charges are pending,” the NYPD said.
