Active Shooter Situation at Brown University
Authorities in Rhode Island responded to an active shooter report on Brown University’s campus, leading to the arrest of a suspect.
On Sunday, school officials alerted students via text messages and voicemails about the situation near the Barus and Holley engineering building, referencing the Department of Public Safety.
The first alert, issued at 4:22 p.m., stated, “Urgent: There’s an active shooter near Barus & Holley Engineering. Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice. Remember: RUN if you can safely evacuate; HIDE if you cannot leave; FIGHT only as a last resort.”
A subsequent alert at 4:51 p.m. indicated that both Brown and Providence police were responding, along with emergency medical personnel. They confirmed that one suspect was in custody, and the school was working with several law enforcement agencies. Students were advised to remain sheltered until further updates.
Police later issued a statement advising students to continue sheltering in place and stay clear of the Barus and Holley area while they searched for any additional suspects.
Details about possible injuries remain unclear; however, a report from the Brown Daily Herald mentioned videos showing “several individuals lying on the ground near the Sciences Library.”
Multiple buildings on the campus were placed on lockdown as the situation unfolded.
