Person County Reports Eighth Rabies Case This Year

Officials in Person County have confirmed the eighth rabies case in the area for this year.

Person County Animal Services, along with the Health Department, is advising the community to exercise caution following an incident involving a raccoon discovered on Ridge Road within Roxboro’s city limits.

So far, there has been no confirmation of any contact between humans or domestic animals and the raccoon.

Rabies is a severe virus that affects the brain and nervous system. Immediate medical attention is essential for humans, as rabies is entirely preventable if treated promptly.

Delaying treatment can have fatal consequences.

Residents are urged to stay alert and protect their families and pets.

County officials have shared some important reminders:

  • Do not touch or approach wild animals or unfamiliar pets.
  • Be aware of your surroundings while outdoors.
  • Supervise children and pets, keeping them away from wildlife.
  • Ensure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations, which are mandated by law and vital for their safety. Vaccinations can be obtained daily at the shelter during regular hours without an appointment.
  • Avoid handling stray or injured animals, even those that may appear friendly.
  • If you or someone else is bitten or scratched by an animal, or if a pet interacts with a wild animal:
  • In emergencies, call 911.
  • Seek immediate medical assistance.

Signs of a rabid animal include:

  • Aggressive or unusually friendly behavior
  • Difficulty walking or staggering
  • Foaming at the mouth
