Person of interest in custody after Wisconsin newlyweds gunned down in bar shooting

A newlywed couple was found shot to death inside a sports bar in Wisconsin on Thursday, February 1st, and those involved are in police custody.

Gina Weingart, 37, and Emerson Weingart, 33, were shot and killed just after midnight Thursday inside the Sports Page Bar in Elkhorn, according to an Elkhorn Police Department news release posted on social media. It was done.

On Monday, Elkhorn Police announced they were focusing on leads that led to the arrest of a suspect that occurred over the weekend. Police also noted that the person was taken into custody on an unrelated matter while authorities continue their investigation.

Elkhorn police said a 911 call came in just before 12:30 a.m. saying shots had been fired, but the couple had died from their injuries by the time police arrived.

Friends and family told FOX6 News the couple recently married in June. Her friend said Gina was a bartender at the bar and Emerson was there to attend to her when the shooting occurred.

The bar’s owner posted on Facebook calling the shooting an act of cowardice.

“First, some coward came into the bar and opened fire. This person has not yet been identified or arrested, but I won’t talk about him,” Jordan Barr wrote.

Gina Weingart, 37, and Emerson Weingart, 33, were killed in the shooting around 12:10 a.m. Thursday, according to the Elkhorn Police Department. The two had just gotten married in June. (FOX 6 Milwaukee)

Barr went on to say that before Gina and Emerson started working as bartenders, they often visited the bar and got to know the staff.

“The staff and patrons at Sports Page Bar have always been a close-knit group, more than a family. Before Gina joined the staff, she and Emerson arrived, and soon all of us, staff and patrons, I became close friends with him,” Barr wrote. “Their lives have only just begun and on behalf of the entire Sports Page family I want to say that we are completely devastated by this event. This has shaken us all to the core. It is a despicable act of violence.”

Gina and Emerson began dating in 2020 and became inseparable, according to the couple’s obituary.

The couple’s funeral will be held on Saturday, February 10th at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burlington, according to Daniels Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Police have not yet determined whether they believe the couple were targeted or whether it was a random attack.

“We are all devastated right now and pray that Emerson and Gina get the justice they deserve,” Emerson’s brother, Leland Weingart, told FOX6 in a text message.
