Florida Woman Arrested for Allegedly Burying Kittens Alive
A woman in Florida, reportedly disturbed, took drastic measures against a litter of kittens, burying them alive due to her belief that they were “demonic.” Fortunately, law enforcement was able to rescue two of the tiny furballs from being buried in her yard.
According to the sheriff in Martin County, 37-year-old Alba Chavez might have been struggling with mental health issues, or perhaps she simply didn’t like cats. On Thursday, deputies responded after hearing the meows coming from beneath the dirt.
Footage captured the moment officers uncovered two plastic bags containing the wriggling kittens. One officer exclaimed, “Oh, they’re still alive.”
Police arrived after children in the vicinity reported that they had been hiding the cats from Chavez, fearing for their safety. They grew concerned when the cats went missing.
Upon arrival, Chavez apparently admitted to her actions, stating that she had killed the kittens because she believed they were demons and wouldn’t allow any brown or black cats in her home.
“If you want the cats, you will need gloves, a red bag, and a shovel,” she allegedly told officers.
While two of the kittens were rescued, tragically, two others were found dead, with one still unaccounted for.
Chavez was taken into custody and faces felony charges for aggravated animal cruelty. During questioning, she referred to the cats as “very ugly” before becoming uncooperative, even singing and refusing to speak further.
“She said they were demonic. She said they were ugly. She said she didn’t want those cats in her house,” Sheriff John Budensiek shared with the media. He expressed uncertainty about whether her behavior stemmed from mental health issues or simply a strong dislike for the animals.
The rescued kittens, estimated to be around three weeks old, were quickly taken to a veterinary hospital and have since been placed in foster care. The foster parent noted that while they were initially sluggish and still learning how to walk and eat, they’ve made impressive progress.
“These two are fighters for sure, and they are meant to be here; they have a purpose,” she said, adding that it could be to bring joy to a child or family in need.
The kittens will be up for adoption after about two months of care.
“They are going to find their forever home, and it’s going to be somebody that loves them,” the foster parent remarked.
As for Chavez, she remains in custody as of Wednesday.
