Person Who Fatally Shot 3 Americans Was Employed by Security Forces and Was Being Evaluated for 'Extremist' Beliefs

Attack in Palmyra Claims Lives of US Soldiers

This weekend, a spokesperson from the Syrian Interior Ministry confirmed that the individual responsible for the deaths of two US soldiers and an interpreter in Palmyra was associated with the security forces of the jihadist government. However, they emphasized that this person’s “extremist” views are currently being assessed.

On Saturday, three Americans lost their lives during an operation in Palmyra, which involved Syrian government-linked forces led by former al-Qaeda leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. This operation was part of efforts by the US-led coalition against ISIS. Notably, Syria’s president became part of this coalition during a significant visit to the White House last November, which had the backing of President Trump.

This incident marks the first attack of this kind since Bashar al-Assad assumed power. Reports indicate that Sean Parnell, the assistant secretary of the Army for public affairs, confirmed that three other Americans were also injured in the ambush.

“The attack occurred while the soldiers were engaged in a key leadership engagement, aimed at supporting ongoing counter-ISIS operations in the area,” Parnell explained.

Following the attack, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth acknowledged that the attackers were neutralized by allied forces. The Pentagon highlighted that President Sharaa does not maintain control over the region where the attack took place.

Syrian Interior Ministry spokesman Nour Eddin Al-Babbah informed reporters that while the attackers had been identified, they were not part of the internal security command. Still, it appears they were somehow linked to the Syrian security forces.

“The internal security forces in the Badia region consist of over 5,000 personnel, and each member is evaluated on a weekly basis,” Al-Babbah stated. He mentioned that the individuals identified as attackers underwent an “assessment” on December 10, suggesting potential extremist or ideological leanings.

Al-Babbah indicated that the next steps involve determining whether the gunmen were official members of ISIS or self-radicalized individuals acting alone.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that they had conducted a significant security operation related to this terrorist attack, resulting in the arrest of five individuals in Palmyra.

The ministry also revealed that the attack was aimed at the headquarters of the Council of Internal Security Leadership in the desert region, noting the involvement of a United Nations delegation and casualties resulting from the assault.

The Sharaa government has vowed to respond robustly against any threats to stability in Syria.

After the news broke, President Trump reiterated his administration’s support for Sharaa’s government, stating that it does not control the area affected by the attack. He expressed sorrow over the loss of the American personnel, emphasizing their bravery and offering prayers for the injured soldiers.

Sharaa reportedly reached out to President Trump, expressing his condolences and reaffirming his government’s commitment to maintaining security in Syria and the surrounding region.

Syria’s foreign minister spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, extending condolences and reinforcing the Syrian government’s resolve against the ISIS threat. The State Department remarked that the US would hold accountable those who harm or threaten its citizens.

Since formally joining the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in November, following discussions between Sharaa and President Trump, there is much scrutiny regarding HTS, an al-Qaeda affiliate. While HTS holds Islamist views, it has no known history of collaboration with ISIS against the United States, primarily focusing instead on opposing Assad’s regime.
