Attempted Assassination of Judge Kavanaugh
A man who attempted to assassinate Judge Brett Kavanaugh following the Dobbs decision claimed in court documents that he identifies as transgender. This revelation came from his attorney in filings made on Friday.
Nicolas Rosuke, arrested in June 2022 near Kavanaugh’s Maryland home with robbery tools and firearms, told officers he intended to kill a Supreme Court judge. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has recommended legal proceedings against him.
In the defense attorney’s submission, Rosuke was referred to as Nicholas John Rosuke, but he had also pleaded under the name “Sophie Rosuke.” The attorney noted, “The case is titled United States v. Nicholas John Rosuke,” emphasizing that this name remains his legal identity. Rosuke’s lawyer has not requested a name change in the case. For the sake of this plea, the attorney referred to Rosuke as Sophie and used female pronouns.
This year, Kavanaugh received a letter indicating threats to his life, suggesting ongoing consequences for the judiciary and its members in the future.
The defense attorney stated, “This court’s decision must communicate a strong message against threats of violence towards the judiciary and public officials. It’s important to reflect the harm caused to the judicial system and to ensure that such actions lead to significant prison time, rather than being dismissed as ideologically motivated.”
Records show Rosuke used the name “Sophie” online in 2022. In a message from March 2022, he expressed his poor mental health and apparent fearlessness about death, writing, “But prison sounds even worse. Being monitored to the point where you can’t even kill yourself, so if I kill someone, I’ll definitely try to get away with it.”
Attorney General Pam Bondy commented on Friday, calling Rosuke’s actions “an attack on the entire judicial system that cannot go unpunished.” She emphasized the Department of Justice’s condemnation of political violence and reassured that the prosecutors would ensure serious consequences for Rosuke’s actions.
