PETA wants Wichita’s Chance Rides to stop using animal figures on amusement rides

Wichita, Kansas (KSNW) — A ride on the merry-go-round brings back some of your favorite childhood memories, including the unique music, dizzying sensations, and intricately painted horses and other animals.

Would the merry-go-round be just as memorable if we removed the animals?

On Tuesday, People demanding the ethical treatment of animals It has been announced that animal designs will no longer be featured on the carousel. PETA is concerned about a Wichita, Kansas, company known for its beautiful carousel.

chance ride is the largest amusement park manufacturer in Japan.

PETA announced Tuesday that it has sent a letter to the company’s president asking him to stop manufacturing and selling “animal-themed carousels that normalize the use of animals for rides and entertainment.”

The group suggests replacing animals with vehicles such as cars, planes, spaceships and bulldozers, or with whimsical designs such as rainbows, shooting stars and brooms.

Nexstar’s KSN News reached out to Chance Rides by phone and email but did not receive a response.

PETA says children learn through play.

“Teaching people to have respect and compassion for all living, sentient beings has the potential to help create a more just and compassionate world,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a news release. “There is,” he said. “PETA urges Chance Rides and all other carousel manufacturers to put the brakes on classic animal-themed rides and embrace designs that capture children’s imaginations and unleash human talent. I am.”

In a letter to Chance Ride CEO Aaron Landrum, Newkirk said that understanding of animals has evolved over decades.

“Animal-themed merry-go-rounds unconsciously glorify the exploitation of sentient beings,” she wrote.

Newkirk’s letter says live animals used for entertainment are sometimes abused and killed. She said all animals are thinking, feeling, loving, playful and social creatures who crave freedom from oppression.

“The animal-themed merry-go-round set suggests that these sentient beings are not individuals with the same ability to experience fear, pain, joy, and love as we do, but simply for our entertainment. It reinforces the concept that we are here for,” she wrote.

PETA said other companies also updated their designs after the group joined.

In her letter to Chance Ride, Newkirk gives the following example:

  • 2018 – Nabisco replaced the caged animal design in Barnum’s Animal Crackers.
  • 2019 – Trader Joe’s changed the packaging of some products and removed images of elephants playing.
  • 2023 – Ducal stops selling bandages depicting circus animals

“Millions of people around the world are calling for an end to the exploitation of animals in entertainment, including the use of horses, camels, and other animals as if they were living taxis,” Newkirk wrote. “Would you please promise to stop supporting this abuse by no longer producing merry-go-round dolls in the shape of animals? Please consider this. We look forward to hearing from you.”
