The Mets’ season may be a bust, but in a rare positive development, Pete Alonso’s hand is not.
A CT scan of the first baseman’s right hand showed no fracture, The Washington Post confirmed Thursday. Alonso is on a wait-and-see basis after suffering a bone bruise after being hit by a 93 mph fastball in Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to the Dodgers.
Alonso was removed immediately, an ominous sign for a tough player who is never out of action and has played all 55 games with the season potentially ending before June.
In addition to the game, which has left the Mets 11 games below .500, they will also be without Edwin Diaz with a shoulder contusion and right-hander Jorge Lopez with an injury. Lopez was designated for draft pick after he threw his glove into the stands and showed no remorse for his actions after manager Carlos Mendoza called them “unacceptable.”
Lopez also appeared to call the Mets “the worst team in the entire MLB,” but later claimed he was referring to himself as his worst teammate.
The Mets open their series against the Diamondbacks on Thursday at Citi Field. If Alonso is unavailable, DJ Stewart and Mark Vientos are the candidates to play first base.
