Pete Alonso Breaks Mets Home Run Record
Pete Alonso has officially made his mark in the Mets’ record books.
The first baseman hit his 253rd career home run against the Braves on Tuesday, surpassing Daryl Strawberry to claim the top spot in franchise history.
This monumental hit gave the Mets a 5-1 advantage at Citi Field, traveling 387 feet to the right center.
Alonso, who was drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft, debuted in the majors in 2019. He has a history of power, hitting at least 34 home runs every year, except, of course, for that shortened season in 2020. So far this year, he’s hit 26 home runs, tying Strawberry’s record just a few days ago.
Interestingly, Alonso mentioned that he didn’t think about the record immediately after hitting his 250th home run against the Giants on August 2nd.
“The records are really special, but in the heat of the moment, my focus is on winning,” he said. “We’re in the thick of the playoff race, and I think about the rest during the offseason or whenever I have time.”
This is Alonso’s seventh season with the Mets, and he really cemented his legacy with last year’s playoff performances.
Dominique Smith, a former teammate and current player for the Giants, remarked that Alonso is “one of the best power hitters this generation has seen.”
“I’ve watched him since he was a kid, and he broke the rookie home run record. Honestly, there’s nothing out of reach for him,” Smith added.
Alonso also holds the Mets’ single-season record for home runs with 53, set during his rookie year in 2019. Meanwhile, Strawberry’s own legacy includes an eight-year tenure with the Mets, where he established a franchise record by playing 1,109 games.
