Pete Alonso, Luisangel Acuna propel Mets past Nationals

The Mets were without Francisco Lindor again on Tuesday night and came back to beat the Nationals again to move one step closer to a playoff berth.

This time, the offense looked good despite lacking a leadoff hitter, scoring four runs in the third inning to win 10-1 at Citi Field.

Pete Alonso led the team with a three-run homer and five RBIs, while Lindor's replacement, Luis Ángel Acuña, hit his first MLB home run and had three hits.

The Mets also received an assist from the Reds, who came from behind to beat the Braves and take a two-game lead in the race for the final National League wild card.

The Mets are set to complete a sweep of Washington in Queens on Wednesday, but their road to the postseason gets tougher again with 11 games remaining in the regular season and the Phillies coming to town for a four-game series on Thursday.

Alonso and the offense weren't the only ones leading the way on Tuesday, as Tyler Megill had his second straight game of impressive play.

The right-hander allowed just one run in six innings pitched.

After scoring just three runs in their previous two games, the offense came back to life in the third inning against left-hander Mitchell Parker.

Megill, who is off to his best start of the season for Toronto, allowed two hits as the starting rotation continues to perform well.

He got off a two-out double by Dylan Cruz in the second inning and struck out Joey Gallo to end the inning.

Megill walked Jacob Young in the top of the second inning.

C.J. Abrams then hit a grounder to third base and Mark Vientos tried to send Young to second, but Acuna missed the ball and it got away, allowing the runners to advance to third and third with no outs.

James Wood grounded out to score the first run of the game (unearned), and Megill walked Juan Yepes before pitching a wild pitch.

But with runners on second and third, Megill rebounded and struck out Luis Garcia Jr. to keep the score at one.

Harrison Bader, batting first in the bottom half of the inning, walked four pitches and Acuña atoned for his blunder as shortstop with a double to left-center field.

The 109 mph rocket brought Bader home from first base to tie the game.

Gallo failed to handle Jose Iglesias' grounder to first base, allowing the runner to advance to third base with no outs.

Starling Marte's walk, which brought in the game-winning run on Monday, loaded the bases.

Alonso then hit a flare down the right field line that came to rest in the fairway for a two-run single to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.

Vientos' sacrifice fly made the score 4-1.

Francisco Alvarez hit a home run as leadoff batter in the bottom of the fourth inning.

It was the catcher's ninth home run of the season, but his third in his last five starts.

The Mets added another run in the fifth inning when Alonso doubled to start the inning and then Tyrone Taylor doubled home Alonso with one out.

Alonso and the Mets sealed the victory in the sixth inning when the first baseman hit a three-run homer, his 33rd of the year.

Adam Ottavino survived a bases-loaded seventh inning crisis while keeping the scoreless.

The Mets have won eight of their last nine home games and have an MLB-best record of 61-35 since May 29, keeping them in the running to make the playoffs.
