Alonso Ties Strawberry’s Home Run Record
Milwaukee – Pete Alonso and Daryl Strawberry. The connection between these two is quite remarkable, especially for the current Mets lineup.
The day after tying for the franchise record with his 252nd career homer, Alonso shared that his relationship with Strawberry adds significant weight to his achievements.
Strawberry has been around the Mets lately, serving as a guest instructor during spring training and acting as an ambassador for the team.
“Having a real, face-to-face connection with him is amazing,” Alonso remarked before the Mets played against the Brewers. “He really embodies what this organization is about.”
Alonso, who had to step out to attend to family matters before addressing reporters, noted that it felt strange to celebrate a personal milestone with a game still to win. However, ultimately, the Mets lost 7-4.
This latest home run isn’t just a statistic; it brings back memories. Alonso’s previous great moments at American Family Field include a ninth inning blast against Devin Williams that helped the Mets win in the National League Wildcard Series. And, just two years ago, he hit a crucial home run that contributed to Max Scherzer reaching his 200th career victory.
“This is a great stadium for hitting. You really can see the ball well here,” Alonso said. “One of my most memorable homers here was a three-run shot against Corbin Burns—it was huge. But nothing compares to that playoff homer.”
When asked whether he would have believed it if someone had told him before his rookie season that he’d catch up with Strawberry on the performance leaderboard, he hesitated a bit before responding.
“If the situation allowed me, maybe I would’ve believed it,” he said. “For me, it’s really about staying healthy, playing frequently, and contributing to the team’s success.”
Alonso, now 30, expressed that he could envision reaching the 500-home run club by the end of his career. “If I stay healthy,” he noted, “I believe it’s possible. I want to play until I’m 40. Hitting 500 homers? That seems reasonable.”
