Pete Alonso Reflects on His Career and Future with the Mets

Pete Alonso has witnessed his entire career unfold with the Mets, and recently, he shared his thoughts with Post’s Steve Selby. When asked about the idea of finishing his career with the team, Alonso described it as “great,” especially when everything aligns well at the end of the business side of things.

“It could be fantastic. It’s really unusual for a player to stay with one team for their entire career. So, yeah, I’ve been thinking about it,” he noted. “But, you know, the business aspects need to fall into place. I love being here. Playing in Queens is awesome. I just hope those business matters get sorted out.”

“I hope the business side works smoothly enough so that I won’t have to leave,” he added.

This past offseason, Alonso’s future with the Mets seemed uncertain due to long-term free agency concerns. Ultimately, he inked a two-year, $54 million deal complete with opt-outs after 2024, just before spring training, allowing him to remain in Queens.

So far this season, Alonso’s performance has been impressive, marking what some might call a career year. He has established a .298/.397/.584 slash line through 70 games, which are all career highs, along with 17 home runs, 22 doubles, and leading the MLB with 63 RBIs.

His 179 OPS+ also tops all National League hitters.

It’s quite a turnaround, especially compared to last year when he faced struggles during a rocky contract season, managing a career-low .788 OPS during the regular season.

“I really want to see him succeed no matter what. If he were to retire as a Met, that would be amazing,” his father, Peter, mentioned to Post.
