Pete Alonso Moves to the Orioles

Pete Alonso is officially on the move. The first baseman, often called the “Polar Bear,” signed a five-year contract worth $155 million with the Baltimore Orioles. This deal marks the end of his seven-year tenure with the New York Mets, particularly following the loss of Edwin Diaz to the Dodgers earlier this week.

In the previous season, Alonso played all 162 games and achieved a batting line of .272/.347/.524, hitting 38 home runs along the way. He also led the National League with 41 doubles. At 31, he’s become one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason after opting out of his contract post-World Series.

Alonso attended the winter meetings in Orlando to explore his options, although he didn’t participate in discussions with the Mets.

Despite his exit, the Mets have expressed a desire for Alonso to return to Queens, where he has made his mark over the years. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza stated, “How much do I want him? Of course I want him. His ability to be there every day, without worrying about first base or lineup spots, is invaluable.” Mendoza also mentioned that Alonso’s return is a priority for the team.

This offseason isn’t the first time Alonso has found himself in negotiations—he entered the market last year as well, but discussions with the Mets didn’t begin until February. Ultimately, they settled on a two-year deal for $54 million, which included an opt-out for 2026.

Alonso debuted in MLB back in 2019, making headlines by hitting .260/.358/.583 with a rookie record of 53 home runs. Over his career, he has been a five-time All-Star and recently received his first Silver Slugger Award in 2025.
