Pete Alonso smashes grand slam as Mets bats break out in destruction of Marlins

MIAMI – The torpedo doors remained closed, but Pete Alonso had no trouble sinking enemy fleets Monday night.

Before the game, he doesn't use the innovative torpedo bats that became the talk of MLB following the Yankees' Homer barrage over the weekend, but he “maybe order and try it out” and got the Mets, which resembles a destructive force for the first time this season.

Alonso's Grand Slam was one of four home runs attacked by the Mets in the 10-4 demolition of the Marlins at Rondepot Park.

After three frustrating offensive games at Houston, they only managed five runs in total, then two losses, the Mets jumped to right-handed Calcantril in five innings and ran a coast.

Among the few people not involved in the explosion was Francisco Lindor. He spent the night after returning from Orlando, Florida, after his wife Katia gave birth to the couple's third child (and eldest son) on Sunday.

Sterling Marte, Lewis Torrens and Brandon Nemo also went deep into the Mets. The only Homer in the first three games was the Juan Soto explosion on Friday.

It all provided a lot of support for David Peterson. David Peterson allowed two runs to win with nine strikeouts and three hits in three innings. The left-hander became the first Mets starting pitcher of the season, finishing six innings.

Peterson hit three batters in the first innings, but allowed a solo homer to Otto Lopez, who put the Mets on the 1-0 hole.

In Lindor's absence, batting leadoff, with third Marte tied 1-1 and home. Marte drank a curveball for a strike before jumping on the next pitch, then lagged behind on the hanging curve and cleaned up the left field fence.

The Mets turned the game into a fifth runaway, with Alonso's fourth career grand slam as the catalyst. Jose Ciri stroked an RBI double to give the Mets a 2-1 lead, and after Marte hit the pitch and Soto walked, Alonso filled the count before fouling two sinkers. With Quantrill's third straight sinker, he cleared the field fence on the right.

There was even more lightning in the innings. Torrens hit a two-run homer that extended their lead to 8-1. Mark Vientos drew a one-out walk before Torrence hit Liam Hicks' gloves at the top of the fence and hit a shot into the centre that bouncing off.

For the sixth time, Alonso extended the lead to 10-1 with Nemo jumping on a 1-2 slider from George Soriano and jumping to the fourth Mets Homer of the night.

Peterson granted Homer to Eric Waggaman in the sixth.

Huascar Brazobán and Danny Young combined to work in the final three innings. Young surrendered two runs in the ninth, snapping a 12¹/₃ scoreless innings streak for the Mets' bailouts to begin the season.
