In the opening play of Sunday’s Metro Series finale, Mark Vientos made a mistake, allowing a ground ball by Paul Goldschmidt to slip by.
Goldschmidt capitalized by scoring on Cody Bellinger’s two-run double later in the inning.
This early misplay set a negative tone for the Mets, who had already suffered an 8-2 defeat earlier in the week at Yankee Stadium.
There was a notable moment when Pete Alonso attempted to field a grounder from Yoruvit Vivas. He initially appeared to have a play at home against Jackson Dominguez, who was trying to score, but it ended up giving the Yankees an extra run instead.
That play unfolded in the infield following an extensive 11-pitch at-bat by Vivas, who hit a roller that Alonso was expected to field cleanly.
With the infield drawn in, Alonso seemed ready to nab the quick Dominguez at home for the second out.
Instead, his throw went wide, leaving Francisco Alvarez with no chance to make a play.
This moment was just one part of a tough night for Alonso, who, along with the rest of the top lineup, struggled to contribute for the Mets.
Alonso had a challenging game, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, which put him in a category with Francis Colindoor and Fan Soto, who also failed to hit from the top of the order.
The Mets managed to stay engaged in the game thanks to a solid start from David Peterson and some impressive relief work from Juascal Brazovan.
Yet, they couldn’t shake off two costly errors, and their offense fell flat against Max Fried and the Yankees’ bullpen.
Those defensive errors resulted in four undesired runs.
For Alonso, it was yet another rough play in what has otherwise been a season of rediscovering his swing and finding ways to bounce back. Unfortunately, his throwing issues remain a concern, and the errors during the game proved to be particularly damaging.
