Notable items during the Mets’ spring training practice Friday in Port St. Lucie:
D-Lightful
Pete Alonso may have been happiest during infield practice when he charged in, hit a soft ground ball, and hit third baseman Brett Batty with a strike.
The first baseman let out a roar of celebration and received applause.
Take it slow
Omar Narvaez laughed after finishing live batting practice with right-hander Jorge Lopez with a hit.
The left-handed catcher made accidental contact while trying to check the swing, sending the ball down the third base line. He raised his fist from the field.
It caught my eye
Carlos Mendoza doesn’t sit and watch assistant coaches lead practices.
Before practicing the infield, the new manager hit a fly ball to the outfield and hit a sharp ground ball to the infield of Group A.
After that, he picked up the mitt and served as the team’s de facto first baseman.
Saturday schedule
Tyler Megill will start in the Mets’ Grapefruit League opener against the Cardinals at Clover Park starting at 1:10 p.m.
