Pete Davidson criticizes the star-packed audience of 'SNL 50': Unpleasant

Pete Davidson’s Take on SNL 50th Anniversary Audience

Pete Davidson recently shared some candid thoughts about the audience at the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special. During a Wednesday appearance on “Late Night with Seth Myers,” he described the crowd as “bad,” commenting that it felt like it was filled with celebrities more concerned about themselves than the show.

Having been on “SNL” from 2014 to 2022, Davidson noted that he found the atmosphere somewhat disappointing, saying, “It’s a terrible audience.” He added a touch of humor by calling himself “a crime of this.”

The “SNL50: The Anniversary” aired on February 16 and celebrated the show’s decades of comedic legacy. It featured a mix of musical performances and unforgettable sketches from past and present stars, including Davidson, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, and others.

The audience was packed with notable figures like Robert De Niro, Kim Kardashian, Blake Lively, and many more. In fact, the production team had to squeeze in an additional 200 chairs just to fit everyone.

Despite his critique of the crowd, Davidson did have a pleasant encounter with Meryl Streep. He recounted an amusing moment: as he took his seat, he noticed Streep and awkwardly complimented her, to which she responded with kindness.

During the special, Davidson reprised his character Chad in several sketches, alongside LaRain Newman, who was part of the original cast back in 1975.

Dan Aykroyd, another original cast member, opted not to attend the special, wanting to watch from home instead. He expressed that seeing the sketch between Newman and Davidson was particularly emotional for him.

Looking back, Davidson reflected on his time with “SNL,” mentioning that he created just one character during his eight years there. “But it’s not a very flattering character,” he admitted, noting that many were eager to see LaRain come back to the spotlight.
