Review Ordered on Afghanistan Withdrawal
The U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has initiated a review concerning the “devastating” withdrawal from Afghanistan that took place during President Biden’s administration. This withdrawal, which occurred in August 2021, saw the tragic loss of 13 U.S. service members due to terrorist bombings.
Critics have accused President Biden of mishandling the withdrawal, suggesting that his administration’s actions allowed a suicide bombing to occur at the gates of Kabul International Airport, resulting in over 12 American fatalities alongside more than 170 Afghan casualties.
“The Department of Defense has a duty to uncover the facts for both Americans and the Afghan fighters who made sacrifices,” Hegseth remarked during a press conference.
On Tuesday, he emphasized the necessity of this review to ensure accountability for those whose actions led to the deaths of the service members involved.
Hegseth also noted, “President Trump and I have committed to full transparency concerning the military withdrawal from Afghanistan.” He added, “It’s essential for the Department of Defense to discover the truth, a crucial step toward rebuilding trust between the American people, the military, and those affected by the operational challenges during the retreat.”
Biden has characterized the operation as successful, despite the casualties. He stated, “We’ve completed one of the largest airlifts in history, evacuating over 120,000 individuals safely. We’ve never done anything like this before.” He further mentioned that 90% of Afghan Americans seeking to leave were able to do so, asserting, “For those remaining Americans, there’s no cutoff. If they wish to leave, our commitment to assisting them is unwavering.”
Hegseth indicated that the Defense Department has been reviewing the situation for the past three months and has determined that a thorough investigation is warranted.
“As part of this order, I am directing the Secretary of Public Defense and Senior Advisor Shawn Parnell to form a special review panel to meticulously examine prior investigations and evaluate decisions regarding U.S. military operations,” Hegseth explained. He further elaborated that the panel would consider findings, sources, and witnesses relevant to this incident.
“This team will ensure accountability to the American public and the brave fighters of our nation,” he concluded.
