Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said she would not vote to confirm President Donald Trump's pick for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, becoming the first Republican senator to do so.
Mr. Hegseth has endured considerable scrutiny since President Trump nominated him for the position, including personal backlash from other moderate Republicans such as Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa. Murkowski became the first person to publicly oppose President Trump's nominee, despite some hesitation from some Republicans behind the scenes.
“This is not the first time Mr. Murkowski has rebelled against Mr. Trump and his party.”
“After a thorough evaluation, I must conclude that I cannot in good conscience support his nomination as Secretary of Defense,” Murkowski said. said in a statement Thursday. “I have not made this decision lightly. I take my constitutional responsibility to provide advice and consent with the utmost seriousness.”
Murkowski went on to cite concerns about Hegseth's lack of experience in similar management positions, his comments about women in combat, and the anonymous accusations against him of sexual misconduct and alcohol abuse. Hegseth has repeatedly denied these allegations and debunked them.
“Although Ms. Hegseth has recently revised her statements regarding female combatants since her nomination, I remain concerned about the message that Ms. Hegseth's confirmation sends to women currently serving and aspiring to become combatants. '' Murkowski said. “Women have made a mark and contribution to our country, overcoming immeasurable obstacles to excel in combat and in leadership roles, and we want our leaders to respect their contributions to our country.” You have the right to know that you are being evaluated.
“Although the allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking do not allay my concerns, Mr. Hegseth's admission of past conduct, including multiple extramarital affairs, demonstrates his judgment unbecoming of someone who leads our nation's military.” ” Murkowski added. “Men and women in uniform are held accountable for such acts and deserve leaders who hold them to the same standards.”
This is not the first time Murkowski has opposed Trump or his party. Most recently, Murkowski criticized President Trump's sweeping pardons for J6 “hostages” on Wednesday. Murkowski too I voted Approves 19 former President Joe Biden's 2021 Cabinet nominees.
With Murkowski's pledge to vote “no,” Republicans would only lose two more Republican votes, assuming Vice President J.D. Vance acts as the tiebreaker.
