Senate confirmation hearings for Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth are scheduled for the second week of January, the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman tells CNN.
The committee's incoming chairman, Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi), told CNN's Manu Raju that the hearing will be held in January, where committee members will criticize Hegseth on a variety of issues. He said it would be held on the 14th.
The scheduling is significant after Democrats and several establishment Republicans sought to block his nomination earlier this month, casting doubt on whether he would ever get there.

Hegseth is running a massive campaign to gain support from other Republican senators and the public, who are largely in favor and are expected to confirm him.
The Senate Armed Services Committee will have the first vote on Hegseth and will be responsible for advancing his nomination to the full Senate. That's expected, especially after Mr. Hegseth met and had positive talks with one of the holdouts, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa).
After a massive smear campaign against Hegseth (which included a string of hits from anonymous sources), former colleagues, friends and veterans came out in droves to support him.
Hegseth is a multi-deployment veteran and has served in the Army National Guard for more than 20 years.
