Allegations of Misconduct Involving Army Secretary’s Chief of Staff

In Washington, Ricky Breer, who is the chief of staff for Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth, reportedly claimed last year that he went out drinking with Hegseth while disguised, a narrative many have come to view as questionable. It appears this tale was more of a sensational story crafted to flush out a leaker within their ranks.

Two separate sources shared that Breer, 44, told them he and Hegseth, 45, managed to sneak past security during a stay at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City in early 2025. Yet, no proof has surfaced to support this so-called “Great Escape,” which has caused ongoing discontent regarding Breer’s influential role in U.S. military policy.

Many officials from the Trump administration opine that Breer, who transitioned from the Biden administration and has a close relationship with Hegseth, was acting independently to uncover the leaker, thus inviting potential scandal upon Hegseth.

Both sources, who heard the tale directly from Breer, expressed doubts about his judgment and motives. They noted that stories of this kind tend to circulate frequently, making it hard to manage what gets reported.

Hegseth had publicly affirmed he would abstain from all alcohol before his Senate confirmation in January, ensuring his availability during crises amid allegations of past drunken misconduct.

One source recalled being taken aback when Breer shared his account in a Pentagon office in late March or April. They felt that Breer was testing their discretion, but later discovered he was talking about it with others.

“It seemed like a strange way for him to showcase his closeness to Hegseth,” one source said, adding that it was just “crazy” for Breer to suggest he went out drinking with Hegseth disguised. Another official backed this view, stating that Breer had been openly discussing the story.

Despite speculation surrounding the legitimacy of Breer’s claims, the other official declined to comment further. They couldn’t recall any specifics regarding disguises or the bars mentioned. “It didn’t happen,” the first source reiterated, emphasizing that Breer’s intention seemed to be flaunting closeness to Hegseth.

Sources familiar with Breer expressed concern that he might have been trying to stir up trouble within the department, though it’s notable that no credible media outlet deemed the claim reportable.

With the Trump administration being more proactive in preventing leaks, the rise of encrypted communication has complicated accountability, making allegations challenging to substantiate.

Breer’s ascent coincided with a burgeoning friendship with Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer, especially as many of Hegseth’s long-standing colleagues were ousted over leaking claims, which many later contested.

One source reflected on Breer’s pivotal role: “Ricky’s actions have sparked drama and infighting, hampering the department’s operations.” Some speculate that Breer’s motives were to exaggerate his status.

During a flight in April, Breer mentioned consuming nearly three bottles of whiskey but didn’t clarify who actually drank it. He also noted that he was there to protect Hegseth’s sobriety, even while recounting tales of their alleged escapade.

Frustration among Pentagon personnel grew as they confronted Breer about his claims, questioning why he would encourage Hegseth to breach his commitment to sobriety.

Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson addressed the rumors, stating that the Pentagon aims to avoid engaging in “Washington gossip,” especially while overseeing significant military operations abroad.

Breer, who is a rare link to the previous Biden administration, has aspirations for a political career as a Democrat in Florida. He made a rapid transition from military service to becoming Hegseth’s chief of staff last year.

Reportedly, aides have heard Breer disparage President Trump’s military decisions and label Vice President J.D. Vance as “crazy.” Tensions reportedly flared last summer when Breer clashed with Army Secretary Dan Driscoll over a contentious promotion, leading to a confrontation about race and bias in the military’s leadership choices.

Ultimately, despite initial resistance from the White House regarding Breer’s promotion, President Trump relented to Hegseth’s insistence on Breer’s value, leading to his official promotion in December.
