Pete Rose, MLB’s controversial all-time hits leader, dead at 83

MLB legend Pete Rose, who had a historic career and was suspended for life over a gambling controversy, has died, the Reds announced. announced on Monday night.

Rose spent 19 of his 24 MLB seasons with the Reds in two different stints, five with the Phillies and one with the Expos.

During that time, he had 4,256 hits, but in 1989 he was permanently banned from baseball following an investigation into bets he made on games in Cincinnati, where he was manager.

Rose was a player-manager from 1984 to 1986, before retiring and managing the Reds for the final three years before his ban.
