Mourning the Loss of Jim Irsay
Payton Manning referred to the passing of Colts owner Jim Irsay as “sad” in a heartfelt social media tribute. Irsay passed away peacefully in his sleep at 65, leaving the football community in shock and sorrow.
Manning was selected during the Colts’ first draft in 1998, just a year after Irsay assumed ownership of the team. Over 13 years, he earned four MVPs and led the team to a Super Bowl win in 2007.
“I am heartbroken to hear of Jim Irsay’s passing,” Manning shared in an Instagram post. He praised Irsay’s generosity and passion, expressing gratitude for the opportunities Irsay granted him in the NFL. Manning reflected on Irsay’s unmatched love for both the Colts and Indianapolis, stating, “His impact on the players who played for him will never be forgotten.”
Irsay had a significant role in the decision to part ways with Manning in 2012, marking that day as “a difficult day of shared pain” during an emotional press conference. Manning’s departure was a moment that still resonates within the NFL community.
Various NFL teams also expressed their condolences. For instance, the Jets and Bears released statements mourning Irsay’s death. Even the Pacers made a point to honor him during their playoff game with the Knicks.
Interestingly, Irsay had shown support for the Pacers on social media just hours before his passing, highlighting his consistent involvement in the Indianapolis sports scene.
In a statement, Herb Simon and the Simon Family, owners of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, expressed their sadness, describing Irsay as a transformative figure in the city and a passionate community advocate. “He was more than the owner of the Indianapolis Colts,” they noted. “His generosity, vision, and spirit touched countless lives.”
Outside of sports, Tracy Rayman, executive vice president of PETA, remarked on Irsay’s contributions to animal welfare. His initiatives, such as pledging $20 million for the release of an orca and implementing vegan-friendly practices at Lucas Oil Stadium, have left a mark that transcends the field of football.
