A Unique First Impression
Making a memorable first impression can take many forms. Take, for instance, the recent game where the Raiders faced off against the Cowboys on Monday Night Football. During the game, Peyton Manning shared some lighthearted moments, reflecting on his days coaching his girlfriend, a tight end for the Raiders, at the University of Tennessee. He also recounted his amusing first encounter with Brock Bowers.
In the second quarter, on the “Manning Cast,” Peyton mentioned to his brother Eli that his initial All-Pro appearance occurred last season during a game between the Raiders and Broncos.
In the midst of the conversation, Manning took a playful jab at Bowers for attending the University of Georgia, a school he humorously critiqued while also praising Bowers’ girlfriend for being a student at Tennessee, his own alma mater.
“I had never met him before,” Manning remarked. “But he came right up to me, and I jokingly said, ‘Bowers, I know you can’t be too smart since you went to Georgia, but your girlfriend? She’s from Tennessee.'”
Manning pointed out that Cameron Newell, Bowers’ girlfriend, was actually a bright student in his college class. “She’s obviously very smart,” he noted, having been appointed as a professor at Tennessee’s College of Communication and Information in 2023. “It’s great that he figured that out.”
Eli chimed in, teasing his brother with follow-up questions about his teaching skills, teasing, “Is she smart just because she’s in your class? Why is that so obvious?”
Peyton clarified that while Newell is indeed bright, he emphasized the challenges of the course. “It’s an easy ‘A,’ but it’s a pretty tough class,” he added with a grin.
Newell is frequently spotted cheering for Bowers during games. Her enthusiasm is evident on her Instagram, where she has supported him even during his time with the rival Bulldogs.
Over the weekend, Georgia State claimed victory against Texas, with Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning—Peyton’s nephew—cheering from the sidelines.
