PGA Tour golfer Sam Burns smashes, breaks driver

Sam Burns will need a new driver.

The golfer, ranked 33rd in the world, made a big mistake with his tee shot on the ninth hole of the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind on Saturday.

He then slammed his driver into the ground, breaking the head off the remaining part of the club.

Due to PGA Tour rules, Burns was not able to replace his driver because it did not break during regular play, forcing him to play the remainder of the round without one.

The Louisiana native was two strokes behind leader Hideki Matsuyama entering the ninth hole, but a mis-hit shot resulted in a double bogey.

Burns entered Sunday’s final round tied for fourth place at 10 under par, seven strokes behind leader Matsuyama.

“I was surprised,” Matsuyama said through an interpreter Saturday, “but I played well today.”

Burns, 28, is a five-time winner on the PGA Tour but has yet to win this year.
