Pharrell Williams expresses his dislike for politics, describing it as a 'magic trick'

Pharrell Williams Critiques Politics at Black Ambition Demo Day

During the 5th annual Black Ambition Demo Day, musician and producer Pharrell Williams candidly shared his disdain for politics.

“I hate politics. I despise them. It’s like a magic trick. It doesn’t reflect reality. I can’t support either side since both promote division,” he expressed.

He added, perhaps controversially, “This might not be a popular opinion, but we have to acknowledge—maybe the well is running dry.”

In his address to the predominantly Black audience, Williams urged attendees to prioritize excellence rather than relying too heavily on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in today’s political landscape. “Are you doing this for the right reasons? Do you believe you’re the best fit? Is it because of your race or your abilities?” he asked.

  • “Do you want someone to back your startup because you’re Black or because it’s the best?” he continued.

He argued that, while it’s essential to support Black and brown businesses, the focus should always be on merit, not skin color. “We should support businesses for their quality, regardless of the entrepreneurs’ backgrounds,” he noted.

Williams has previously mentioned that he steers clear of political battles. In a 2024 conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed frustration toward celebrities who openly endorse political candidates.

He added, “Some celebrities I respect have their opinions, but that doesn’t go for everyone. Like, sometimes I just wish they’d, well, keep quiet. Nobody asked for their thoughts.”

Williams emphasized his belief in individual judgment, stating, “I prefer to remain neutral. Of course, I’ll make my own voting decisions. I respect our nation and its people, but there’s much work ahead, and I’m serious about taking action.”

While he generally maintains a distance from political involvement, there was the instance in 2018 when he sent a cease-and-desist letter to President Trump after the song “Happy” was played at a rally during the former president’s first term.
