Phil Jackson’s ’40-20′ guideline for NBA championship hopefuls includes 3 teams this season

Phil Jackson's '40-20' guideline for NBA championship hopefuls includes 3 teams this season

Phil Jackson’s NBA Championship Predictor

Phil Jackson, a renowned figure in basketball, established a simple guideline for predicting NBA championship contenders long before the playoffs roll around. This guideline, called the “40-20 rule,” asserts that a team needs to secure 40 wins before accumulating 20 losses during the regular season to have a shot at the title. Remarkably, this rule has held up over time; 18 of the last 19 champions and 41 of the previous 45 met this benchmark. Since the NBA adopted the three-point line back in the 1979-1980 season, only a handful of teams have claimed the championship without first achieving that 40-win milestone: the Houston Rockets in 1995, the Detroit Pistons in 2004, the Miami Heat in 2006, and the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021.

Following the Boston Celtics’ recent defeat to the Denver Nuggets, just three teams now fall under Jackson’s 40-20 umbrella for potentially winning the championship in 2026.

The Pistons, who once finished a dismal 14 wins to 68 losses just two years ago, have undergone a transformation. Cade Cunningham is beginning to show why he was the top pick, Jalen Duren is emerging as an All-Star center, and head coach JB Bickerstaff—who took over from Monty Williams after that tough season—has elevated the team’s defense to rank second in the league. Players like Isaiah Stewart, Arthur Thompson, and Ron Holland have played vital roles in this shift. After a strong comeback last season with 44 wins, the Pistons are currently projected to reach about 61.5 wins this year. It’s quite a turnaround, really.

Meanwhile, the Spurs were always predicted to become frontrunners with Victor Wembanyama on board, although few anticipated how swiftly that would happen. Despite not having played a playoff game yet, Wembanyama is already seen as a key factor in the Spurs’ success this season. His defensive prowess is unmatched, and he ranks as a top offensive player too. San Antonio has bolstered its roster by trading for De’Aaron Fox, signing Luke Cornette, and reviving Harrison Barnes’ career. They’ve certainly turned luck into skill by moving up in the lottery for three consecutive years, landing standout prospects like Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper. Even previous lottery picks like Josh Primo and Jeremy Sochan didn’t hinder their luck in capturing top-tier talent while continuing to advance in the lottery.

While the NBA grapples with issues like tanking, load management, and an often underwhelming All-Star Game, its playoffs might just be the most thrilling part of sports today. Remember the last Super Bowl? Not exactly a highlight! Last year’s NBA Finals between the Thunder and Pacers was entertaining, but this year’s championship race is shaping up to be more competitive than ever. With the “40-20 rule” having proved reliable in 41 of the last 45 seasons, if the Pistons, Spurs, or Thunder clinch the title this year, it’ll just go to show that Phil Jackson knew what he was talking about all along.
