Phil Mickelson admitted he was wrong about Scottie Scheffler after the major victory in 2025 PGA Championship

Phil Mickelson’s Bold Statement About Golf Rankings

It’s interesting how often hot takes miss the mark. They’re called hot takes for a reason, right?

Back in March, Phil Mickelson sparked conversation when he asserted that Liv golfer Joaquin Niemann was the top golfer in the world. Of course, this was quite a claim, especially considering that Scottie Scheffler had just secured that title after winning the PGA Championship.

Things got even more intense for Phil. He faced backlash for his comments about Scheffler, and it didn’t help that Scheffler suggested he might struggle to win before the upcoming Ryder Cup.

Phil has since acknowledged his statement. After Scheffler triumphed at the CJ Cup weeks later, it became clear Phil misjudged the situation. He even took the opportunity to congratulate Scheffler, emphasizing his impressive claim to the Wanamaker Trophy.

In a Twitter post, Mickelson congratulated Scheffler, declaring him “clearly #1 in the world.”

This acknowledgment serves as a sort of capitulation from Phil, admitting he was mistaken in his earlier take.
