Golf legend Phil Mickelson voiced his opinions regarding controversial remarks made by lawmaker Ilhan Omar about Charlie Kirk. On CNN, Omar referred to Kirk as “Dr. Frankenstein” and suggested that his legacy belongs in the “dustbins of history.” She expressed her astonishment at people seeking to honor his life and contributions.
“I can’t believe this guy is being celebrated. It’s bewildering and frankly upsetting,” she stated.
Mickelson responded to her comments via a post on X, wishing she would be “sent back to Somalia soon.” He expressed that every time Omar speaks, she promotes hatred. Mickelson has criticized her repeatedly and has been openly supportive of Kirk ever since his death in Utah, paying tribute to his life on social media. He believes that Kirk’s assassination highlighted both the best and worst aspects of humanity.
“It’s tragic. The warmth and unity shown in his memory are touching, but the extreme responses it provoked are disheartening,” Mickelson commented on X.
Omar has faced backlash from GOP members since her initial remarks on Kirk. In a separate interview, she claimed that those opposing her opinions were misrepresenting her words and criticized the Republican response following Kirk’s death. She remarked that the nation has not accurately recognized the struggles faced by marginalized communities.
Despite the negative attention, Omar mentioned her heartfelt sympathies for Kirk’s family and reiterated her opposition to violence. She expressed her beliefs in peace and compassion in a follow-up post.
Meanwhile, other critics have pointed out that some individuals are using Kirk’s death as a means to promote their agendas, with statements suggesting that they lack genuine concern for the late figure.
Democratic colleagues have come to Omar’s defense amidst Republican criticisms. Representative Nancy Mace attempted to initiate a vote to censure her, but the measure was tabled by bipartisan opposition.
Furthermore, complaints against Omar include criticism of her comments following the tragedy and allegations regarding her approach to certain policies and social media usage.
